2002: ANALYSING THE MAIN CHANGES IN THE GRAND SLAM RANKING DURING THE PAST YEAR

  • India, then 9th, up 1, exchange places with Germany (10th), a nation which had stopped producing positive results in Grand Slam pageants since the 1980s, and unfortunately kept on losing ground;

  • Russia, up 4, was then 36th. Panama, up two important notches, moved to the 39th place. Lebanon had also made an impressive move, rising from 51st to 46th place.

  • Cyprus, with a Top 10 placement in Miss Universe, went from the 90th to the 85th position in the Grand Slam Ranking;

  • China kept on giving giant steps, being once again the best mover of the year: it went from 94th to 76th place. Close behind it was Senegal, 92nd, up 17 notches. Vietnam, a Miss World debutant, also made a great move, up 16, arriving at the 92nd place. Albania debuted in Miss Universe and in the Grand Slam with a top 10 placement, arriving in 100th place in the GSR.

In 2002 Turkey finally won a Grand Slam title, Miss World, which was held in Nigeria and finalized in London. Azra Akin made history for her country! In Miss International, Nihan Akkus made it to the Top 12. It was enough for Turkey to emerge as the #1 nation of 2002.

Russia, the original Miss Universe winner, also had a Top 20 placement in Miss World. It was 2nd. Panama took bronze, after inheriting the Miss Universe title, with Justine Pasek.

3) Panama (3002).
