COUNTRY OF THE YEAR 1991: VENEZUELA

Venezuela's performance in the major International beauty pageants kept on mesmerizing everyone! In 1991, for the 5th time, it was the "Country of the Year", after winning Miss World with Ninibeth Leal and reaching the top 6 in Miss Universe with Jackeline Rodríguez. The fact that Niurka Acevedo did not place in Miss International, was not enough to take Venezuela from the top of the chart that year.

It was a tough dispute with Mexico though, which had won its first Miss Universe and Grand Slam title, with Lupita Jones, and placed in the Top 15 of Miss International, with Lilia Cristina Serrano. Mexico was 2nd.

Third place went to Poland, winner of the 1991 Miss International contest, with Agnieszka Kotlarska, whose life would have a tragic end five years later when she was stabbed to death by a stalker. She made her country proud that year.

This is how the top nations of 1991 scored in the Grand Slam Ranking:

1) Venezuela (3816 points);
2) Mexico (3426);
3) Poland (2752).

Top 5: France (2350) and Jamaica (1715).
