Venezuela entered the Top 3, in 3rd place, leaving behind Sweden (4th), and Brazil (5th);
Norway moved into the Top 20 (19th, +3), kicking Iceland out (21st, -1);
After placing in the Top 15 of Miss International, the Soviet Union moved 44 positions up, going from 141st to 97th place. It was, by far, the best mover of 1990!

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR 1990: UNITED STATES
The USA, the absolute leader of the Grand Slam Ranking by the end of the 1980s, couldn't have had a better 1990s' kickoff! Carol Gist, the first black woman to represent the US in Miss Universe, finished as 1st runner-up in Hollywood, where the pageant took place that year. Her runner-up in the Miss USA pageant, Gina Marie Tolleson of South Carolina, went to Norway and London to become the second American to be crowned Miss World. In Japan, the USA had a semi-finalist: Shawna Lea Bowman. The Country of the Year was, for the 9th time, was the United States of America!
Norway, the homeland of Mona Grudt, Miss Universe 1990, and Hanne Thorsdalen, top 15 in Miss International, came 2nd that year, followed by Spain, the country that had conquered the Miss International crown, with Silvia Esteban (who would become a singer later on).
