1980: ANALYSING THE MAIN CHANGES IN THE GRAND SLAM RANKING DURING THE PAST YEAR
The 1980s started crowning the American supremacy in Grand Slam pageants, then 16.000 points ahead of the UK, 2nd place, after winning a 5th Miss Universe crown. Can anyone possibly catch the USA??
The dispute between Sweden, now 3rd, and Brazil, 4th, is very exciting. The two countries have been switching 3rd and 4th places in the last three years.
Guam, whose destiny was to have its first Miss World, jumped 19 notches up in the Grand Slam Ranking, going from 54th to the 35th place. It was the best mover of the year.
Costa Rica, after a historical Miss International victory, not only jumped to the 44th place in the ranking (+16), but also took the #1 position in Central America.
The Top 10 in the three Grand Slam pageants by the conclusion of 1980 were:
Miss World Ranking in 1980 (Top 10): 1-UK; 2-United States; 3-Sweden; 4-Germany; 5-France; 6-South Africa; 7-Israel; 8-Australia; 9-Jamaica; 10-Argentina.
Miss Universe Ranking in 1980 (Top 10): 1-United States; 2-Brazil; 3-Sweden; 4-Finland; 5-Israel; 6-England / UK; 7-Germany; 8-Philippines; 9-Colombia; 10-Japan.

THE 1980s ALSO STARTED WITH THE US AT FULL SWING!
And we kick off GB's Grand Slam analysis in the 1980s with the United States as Country of the Year for the 7th time. In 1980, Shawn Weatherly won the Miss Universe title, in Seoul, South Korea, and later became an actress. Charissa Ann Ewing was 2nd in Miss International, only behind Costa Rica's Lorna Chávez, who had won the first Grand Slam title for a Central American country in 1980. In Miss World, the USA reached the Top 15.
In a tied 2nd place that year came Germany, who won the Miss World title and gave up the crown, and Guam, who took over the title that Germany didn't want.
This is how the top nations of 1980 scored in the Grand Slam Ranking:
1) United States - 4900 points;
2) 🇩🇪 Germany - 3002;
2) Guam - 3002.
Top 5: Costa Rica (2752) and New Zealand (1851).
