1981: ANALYSING THE MAIN CHANGES IN THE GRAND SLAM RANKING DURING THE PAST YEAR

  • After an exceptional year, Venezuela raised from the 14th to the 12th position in the Grand Slam Ranking, being then very close to France, and not too far from entering the group of the Top 10 powerhouses in pageantry, which in 1980 remained unchanged in comparison with the year before.

  • Brazil took 3rd place from Sweden again, after all of its three representatives reached the finals of the three Grand Slam pageants.

  • After having placed in Miss Universe for the first time, with Lucía Isabel Vinueza, Ecuador reached the 61st place in the ranking, going 6 notches up. It was the best mover of the year.

1981: MAKE WAY, FOLKS! VENEZUELA IS IN THE HOUSE!

If the giant called Venezuela started waking up in the late 1970s, it was in 1981 that it got up and made it very clear: we have arrived and we are here to stay! The incredible success of Venezuelan beauty queens had behind it a man who, like him or not, deserves our full respect: Osmel Sousa!. Osmel studied the pageants and prepared the Venezuelan representatives accordingly. The extraordinary results achieved back then, like winning Miss Universe 1981, in New York, with Irene Sáez, and Miss World 1981, in Miami and London, with Pilin Leon, transformed the Miss Venezuela pageant in an incredible show, displaying the beauty of Venezuelan women, alongside the colorful and rich culture of the country. Venezuela had much more to offer the world than its precious oil, and that was only the beginning. The two 1981 victories, plus a Top 15 placement in Miss International, with Miriam Quintana, made it Country of the Year for the first time. First of many, we should add! From now on, keep an eye in Venezuela and notice how fast it will grow in the Grand Slam Ranking.

Australia, after winning the Miss International title, with Jenny Annette Derek, and placing in the Top 7 of Miss World, came 2nd. Brazil followed in 3rd place, with the vice-Miss International, Taiomara do Rocio, a 4th place in Miss Universe, with Adriana Alves de Oliveira, and a Top 7 (4th place) in Miss World, with Maristela Grazzia.

This is how the top nations of 1981 scored:

1) Venezuela (6425 points);
2) Australia (3551);
3) Brazil (2900).

Top 5: USA (1775) and Belgium (1725).
