COUNTRY OF THE YEAR 1986: VENEZUELA
And for the third consecutive year, fourth overall, in 1986 Venezuela was the Country of the Year! It is true that Bárbara Palacios Teyde had some tough competition in Panama City, but after nailing the interview competition (one of the best ever!), she was the obvious choice for the Miss Universe title, which ended up happening! In London and in Macau, Maria Begoña Juarist also shined in Miss World, getting to the Top 7 and placing 5th. Meanwhile, in Japan, Nancy Gallardo was among Miss International's Top 15 semi-finalists. Venezuela was truly swapping the competition and rising like foam in those initial years of glory!
The United Kingdom came 2nd, after Helen Fairbrother won another Grand Slam title for England: Miss International. Miss UK placed in the top 15 of Miss World. Trinidad & Tobago was 3rd after winning its first Miss World title, with Giselle Laronde.
