If Venezuela's meteoric climb in the 1980s was unprecedent, Puerto Rico, at its own pace, also made it clear that it would not stop growing. In 1987, Miss Puerto Rico Laurie Simpson was the 4th runner-up in Miss Universe and, a few months later, in Tokyo, conquered the Miss International title. Puerto Rico, the country of the year in 1987, then had all three Grand Slam titles, something that not many nations could claim to have achieved!
It was a tough dispute with Austria, which that year had its second Miss World, Ulla Weigerstorfer, and a Top 15 finisher in Miss International. Third place went to Chile, after the one and only Cecilia Bolocco won the first Miss Universe and Grand Slam title for her country.

This is how the top nations of 1987 scored:

1) Puerto Rico - 3600 points;
2) Austria - 3426;
3) Chile - 3001.

Top 5: Venezuela (2625) and USA (1526).
