1972: WELCOME TO THE TOP 10 OF THE GRAND SLAM RANKING, AUSTRALIA!
Since 1968, Australia had been doing consistently well in Grand Slam pageants, however, nothing could top what its beauty queens did in 1972: winning two Grand Slam titles and placing 2nd in the other! Earning more than 7000 points in the GSR in a single year, Australia entered, for the first time, the TOP 10, in 10th place.
Israel, on the other hand, made an important move, going from 9th to 7th place, therefore distancing itself from the other two Asian powerhouses of that time, Japan (11th) and Philippines (12th).
The biggest mover of the year was Seychelles, going 20 notches up, from 97th to 77th place, after landing in Miss World´s Top 15.
The United Kingdom overtook the United States, becoming the new leader of the Miss International Ranking.
The Top 10 in the three Grand Slam pageants by the conclusion of 1972 were:
Miss World Ranking in 1972 (Top 10): 1-UK; 2-France; 3-United States; 4-Sweden; 5-Germany; 6-South Africa; 7-Israel; 8-Denmark; 9-Finland; 10-Argentina.
Miss Universe Ranking in 1972 (Top 10): 1-United States; 2-Brazil; 3-Sweden; 4-Finland; 5-Germany; 6-England / UK; 7-Japan; 8-Israel; 9-Greece; 10-Argentina.
Miss International Ranking in 1972 (Top 10): 1-England / UK; 2-United States; 3-Philippines; 4-Brazil; 5-Argentina; 6-Iceland; 7-Australia; 8-Germany; 9-Finland; 10-New Zealand.
WITH A "DREAM TEAM", AUSTRALIA IS THE COUNTEY OF THE YEAR 1972
Imagine a single country capturing the Miss World and the Miss Universe crowns in the same year, and to make it even more special, placing 2nd in Miss International! For Australia, it was not a dream, but rather, a "Dream Team" who accomplished it, back in 1972! It was formed by Belinda Green, elected Miss World, Kerry Anne Wells, who chosen as Miss Universe, and Christine Nola Clark, who was the vice-Miss International that year, only behind Britain's Linda Hooks, the eventual winner. These Aussie stunners certainly rocked the year of 1972.
The United Kingdom came 2nd after winning MI, and achieving a 5th place in Miss U and a 7th place in MW, on both occasions with Jennifer Mary McAdam, first as Miss England, then as Miss UK.
Brazil took bronze and earned a place on the 1972 "beauty podium", after being 2nd in Miss Universe, with Rejane Vieira da Costa, and reaching the 4th position in MI, with Jane Macambira.
This is how 1972's top countries scored:
1- Australia (7150 points 👍😲👏);
2- UK (4350);
3- Brazil (2126);
Top 5: Israel (2050); Philippines (2000).
