1973: YES! AFTER WINNING ITS 3RD GRAND SLAM TITLE, PHILIPPINES FINALLY ENTERS THE TOP 10
A Miss Universe victory in 1973, put the Philippines among the Top 10 powerhouses in international pageantry for the first time. Not only that, but it also overtook Japan (12th) and became the 2nd force in Asia, only behind Israel (7th).
Seychelles, after placing among Miss World semi-finalists for the second consecutive year, was the biggest mover of 1973, going from 77th to 67th place in the Grand Slam Ranking.
The Top 10 in the three Grand Slam pageants by the conclusion of 1973 were:

1973: WHEN THE SUN SHONE BRIGHTER IN THE PHILIPPINES!
It was an interesting battle between the Philippines and the USA for Country of the Year 1973. Margarita Moran won the Miss Universe title for the Philippines, in Greece, while Evangeline Pascual placed 2nd in Miss World, in London, which was won by Marjorie Wallace, of the USA. American beauty Amanda Jones was also 2nd in Miss Universe! If you do the math, things were equal for both countries and it meant Miss International would be used as the "tie-breaker"! Mind you: In 1972, the US was 2nd in the Miss International Ranking, while the Philippines came right behind it, in 3rd place! So what happened in Osaka, Japan? Marilen Suarez Ojeda, from the Philippines, did her homework by placing 5th in the pageant won by Finland's Tuula Anneli Björkling (who the year before had been a Top 7 finisher in Miss World), while the USA did not place among the pageant's semi-finalist for the first time since 1961! It means that the Country of the Year 1973 was no other than the Philippines!!
The United States came 2nd, and Finland was 3rd.
Here you can see how the top notchers of 1973 scored:
1) Philippines (5025 points);
2) United States (4251);
3) Finland (2752).
Top 5: England / UK (1901); Spain (1826).
