The Philippines had also continued its impressive climb, going from 13th to 11th place. Lebanon, after winning the Miss Universe title, went from a discreet sixty-sixth place to the fortieth position in the ranking (+26 notches). Guam, 78th in 1969, and 64th in 1970, took the 58th place in 1971, doing quite well in pageants in those days. Portugal, 3rd in Miss World, went from 81st to the 63rd position.

1971: FOR THE THIRD TIME, BRAZIL WAS "COUNTRY OF THE YEAR"
Living its best years in pageant history, in 1971 Brazil became the second nation to have all three Grand Slam titles, after Argentina. Lúcia Tavares Petterle, a student of Medicine from Rio de Janeiro, won the Miss World 1971 crown in London. After hearing that very smart woman speaking on a radio interview, the Queen Mother of Great Britain invited Miss World for tea and offered her a scholarship for postgraduate medical studies in the UK, so impressed she was! Brazil was placed 5th in Miss Universe , with Eliane Guimarães, and placed in the Top 15 of Miss International , held in Long Beach for the last time, with Maria Bernadete Heemann. It was 1971's Country of the Year.
Lebanon, after winning Miss Universe with Georgina Rizk, was the 2nd most successful nation of 1971, followed by New Zealand, winner of Miss International, with Jane Cheryl Hansen.
This is how the top 3 countries scored:
1- Brazil (4275 points);
2- Lebanon (3000);
3- New Zealand (2752).
