THE PHILIPPINES GETS CLOSER TO THE “TOP '10” IN 1970
Once again, the beauty of Filipino women was the subject of articles in the media of many countries. It was the only Asian nation with three Grand Slam titles, which meant it was no surprise that the Philippines had reached the 13th position in the Grand Slam Ranking (+5), as was so close to the Top 10. Australia, 16th (+4), was also growing and on the way to establishing itself as a major pageant power.
Puerto Rico, after winning the Miss Universe title, jumped from 76th to the 39th position (+37), but the biggest mover of 1970 was the Miss World winner, Grenada, who had just gone from the 101st place to the 40th, going impressive 61 notches up! Ecuador, then 57th (+12), also had a pretty good year, after its beauty queens placed as semi-finalists in Miss World and in Miss International.
The Philippines had also overcome Brazil to occupy the 2nd position in the Miss International Ranking, only behind the USA.

1970: THE PHILIPPINES IS "COUNTRY OF THE YEAR"
In 1970, the Philippines won its third Grand Slam title, and had its second Miss Internationalofficial , in just 6 years. Filipinos rejoiced to see beautiful Aurora Pijuan being crowned in Osaka, Japan, on May 16th. Though Simonette de los Reyes failed to make the cut in Miss Universe, a top 15 placement by Minerva Manalo Cagatao in Miss World, made the Philippines the #1 performer in Grand Slam pageants in 1970. For the Philippines, it was a perfect beginning for the new decade! Puerto Rico, the winner of Miss Universe, with Marisol Malaret, came 2nd, followed by another Caribbean nation (still a British territory back then), Grenada, winner of Miss World 1970, with Jennifer Hosten, in 3rd place.
This is how the Top 3 nations of 1970 scored:
1) Philippines (3201 points);
2) Puerto Rico (3001);
3) Grenada (3000).
