MGI 2021: Vietnam wins MGI and its first ever Grand Slam title!

What a thrill! In the conclusion of what was a massively entertaining show, Tien Thuc Thuy Nguyen, 23, a student of Hospitality Management, made history: upon being crowned Miss Grand International 2021, she became the first woman from her country to win a Grand Slam title. Vietnam first participated in Grand Slam beauty pageants in the mid-1990s, in Miss International. Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Supranational, and Miss Grand International followed, already in the new millennium.

“My ambition is to become a person with both freedom and power in my hands. I want to have the freedom to do what I love and to go where I want, and the power to help those in need without worrying about whether I'm rich enough or not”, she wrote in her bio. A standout in the competition from the very beginning, she wowed everyone during the National Costume Competition with her Blue Angel costume, a tribute to those in the front-line during the coronavirus pandemic in her country.

About her historical victory, she told Global Beauties:

“I still can´t believe but I need to emphasize: my victory is the result of hard-working. You must have a goal and work really hard to achieve it, that´s what I did and I am very happy now”.

The new Miss Grand International won a US$ 40,000 cash-prize and will live in Bangkok for the next year. She will crown her successor in Indonesia, the host country of the 10th edition of Miss Grand International. “The event will take place in two venues, Jakarta and Bali. Respecting the religion and traditions of Indonesia, in 2022 MGI will not have the swimsuit competition. Instead, there will be a sportswear parade”, explained fashion icon Ivan Gunawan, who´s proud to have opened the doors for Indonesia to host the event. The announcement was made yesterday night by Mr. Nawat Itsaragrisil and Mr. Gunawan, during the Miss Grand International finale. MGI 2022 will be crowned on October 25th.

Close race

The competition this year was tough! and in what organizers called a “very tight race”, Andrea Aguilera of Ecuador placed 2nd, followed by Lorena Rodrigues of Brazil in 3rd, Vivianie Diaz-Arroyo of Puerto Rico in 4th, and Jeanè Van Dam of South Africa in 5th place.

The Top 10 semi-finalists were Cambodia (Popular vote), Indonesia (elected Miss Global Beauties MGI 2021), Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Spain. (9 out of the 10 were in GB´s final Super 11 list).

Among the group of 20 semi-finalists were the representatives of France, Australia, Malaysia, India, Colombia, Myanmar, Netherlands, Nigeria, Germany, and Angola.

We will soon bring you a full review of the event.
