1996: ANALYSING THE MAIN CHANGES IN THE GRAND SLAM RANKING DURING THE PAST YEAR

  • Colombia, after the 2nd place in Miss World and 3rd in Miss International, 9th in the Grand Slam Ranking, exchanged places with Israel, down one notch, 10th;

  • Greece, with its Miss World victory, recovered three positions, moving up to the 19th place;

  • Portugal, after its Miss International victory, moved 22 notches up, going from 76th to 54th place, its best historical rank. It was the best mover of the year.

  • Aruba, up 12 notches, was 57th in the ranking;

  • Tunisia, up 6, rose to the 76th placement.

And there it is again: Venezuela was the Country of the Year 1996! Alicia Machado won the 4th Miss Universe title for her country, in Vegas, while Anna Cepinska reached the Top 5 in Miss World, in India, and Carla Andreína Steinkopf was a top 15 semi-finalist in Miss International. Venezuela proved that it was truly fierce and nearly unbeatable in Grand Slam beauty pageants!

Greece, winner of Miss World, with Irene Skliva, came 2nd, followed in 3rd by Portugal, which had won its first Grand Slam title (and so far only) with Fernanda Alves, who became Miss International 1996.
