Miss World 2018 Week 1 Recap (Part 2)

By GB’s Special Correspondent Albin B

The girls also had a chance to hear about some of the BWP projects from around the world at an introduction ceremony with BWP Ambassador Stephanie Del Valle as compere. Two girls from each continental group were invited to speak. From Europe - France and Italy, from Africa - Mauritius and South Africa, from the Caribbean - Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti, from the Americas - Chile and Canada, from the host continent Asia, we had China and Japan and finally from Oceania, Australia and New Zealand brought the thunder! While we didn't get to listen to the speeches, as this was a private session, all eyes were on two issues. First, would Miss France, who topped GB's pre-arrival leaderboard live up to her status as favorite? (Sleek and chic in a powder blue dress, we dare say that Maeva Couke made her presence well felt). Second, did the inclusion (or exclusion) of some countries from the list of speakers mean anything? This is a harder one to answer. Traditionally the choice of speakers has proven to be an indication of who the organization has an eye on. Although there are important exceptions, such as Ivian Sarcos in 2011, or Mireia Lalaguna in 2015 for example. Moreover, this was a closed door session and not the traditional public event where the girls are usually put through their paces, and most importantly, Julia Morley was not yet present. So for now, let's call it a draw!

Over the last couple of days and continuing through today, the girls have been busy with dance rehearsals and also divided into three groups - red, blue and yellow which gives them an order of rotation to complete a second round of auditions for the Talent Fast Track, compete in Round 1 of their Head to Head Fast Track and go sightseeing around Hainan island. The lucky girls have already been to Yanoda Rainforest reserve and to Yalong Bay!
