1975: FINLAND HAD ITS SECOND MISS UNIVERSE, AT LAST!

Finland won the first Miss Universe crown back in 1952, then, in the 1960s and early 1970s, it did consistently well, with a considerable number of runner-ups. However, it was only in 1975 that the second crown arrived, with the gorgeous and smart Anne-Marie Pohtamo. Like in Miss World, there protests against the pageant and the objectification of women in Miss Universe outside the National Stadium of San Salvador, which means that Pohtamo's victory came handy: she told the press that she had started working early, valued her education, and would invest her prize money in a fashion store, so that she could employ other women. It was the already gender equality progressive Finland speaking! Eeva Mannerberg was 2nd in Miss International and Leena Vainio placed among the Top 15 in Miss World, as one of the most applauded candidates by the British. Finland was the Country of the Year 1975!

In 2nd place came Yugoslavia, the first nation behind the "iron curtain" to win a Grand Slam pageant (Lidija Vera Manic became Miss International 1975) came 2nd. It also placed 5th in Miss World that year, with Ladija Verkovska.

Puerto Rico was 3rd, after winning Miss World with Wilnelia Merced.

This is how the top nations of 1975 scored:

1) Finland (4600 points);
2) Yugoslavia (3601)
3) Puerto Rico (3002);

Top 5: 4) Haiti (2000); 5) USA (1976).
