Miss World 2019: Jamaica wins the title for the 4th time!
"To that little girl in St. Thomas, Jamaica and all the girls around the world - please believe in yourself. Please know that you are worthy and capable of achieving your dreams. This crown is not mine but yours. You have a PURPOSE," Singh tweeted on Saturday, after she won the 4th Miss World title for her Caribbean island-nation.
Toni-Ann Singh, 23, was born in Morant, St. Thomas, Jamaica. She is a psychology and women studies graduate of the Florida State University who plans to study to become a doctor.
Before winning the title, she earned an ovation from the audience after singing Whitney Houston's hit "I Have Nothing". She was the Talent competition winner as well.
Singh was crowned by last year's winner, Vanessa Ponce de Leon of Mexico, who had a phenomenal year as an excellent Miss World.
The two runners-up for the crown were Miss France, Ophély Mézino (Miss World Europe), and Miss India, Suman Rao (Miss World Asia). Rounding out the group of 5 finalists were Miss Brazil, Elís Miele (Miss World Americas), and Miss Nigeria, Nyekachi Douglas (Miss World Africa).
Other continental queens of beauty were Miss Cook Islands, Tajiya Eikura Sahay (Miss World Oceania), and Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Tya Janè Ramey, Miss World Caribbean.
In addition to the “Top 5”, also made it to the Top 12 group of semi-finalists the representatives of the Cook Islands, Tajiya Eikura Sahay; Kenya, Maria Wavinya; Mexico, Ashley Alvídrez; Nepal, Anushka Shrestha; the Philippines, Michelle Dee; Russia, Alina Sanko; and Vietnam, Lương Thùy Linh.
Quarter-finalists (Top 40) were Antigua and Barbuda, Taqiyyah Francis (first time ever placing in a Grand Slam pageant); Australia, Sarah Marschke; British Virgin Islands, Rikkiya Brathwaite (first time ever placing in a Grand Slam pageant); China, Li Peishan; Denmark, Natasja Kunde; England, Bhasha Mukherjee; Guyana, Joylyn Conway; Hong Kong, Lila Lam; Indonesia, Princess Megonondo; Malaysia, Alexis SueAnn Seow; Moldova, Elizaveta Kuznitova; Mongolia, Tsevelmaa Mandakh; New Zealand, Lucy Brock; Paraguay, Araceli Bobadilla; Poland, Milena Sadowska; Portugal, Inês Brusselmans; Puerto Rico, Daniella Rodríguez; Scotland, Keryn Matthew; South Africa, Sasha-Lee Olivier; Spain, María del Mar Aguilera; Thailand, Narintorn Chadapattarawalrachoat; Trinidad and Tobago, Tya Janè Ramey, Tunisia, Sabrine Mansour; Uganda, Oliver Nakakande; Ukraine, Marharyta Pasha; United States, Emmy Cuvelier; Venezuela, Isabella Rodríguez; and Wales, Gabriella Jukes.
Lulu, one of Britain's most iconic singers, performed her Christmas single ‘Run Rudolph Run”, and closed the show singing ‘Shout’ with all the candidates. The show opened with Kerry Ellis, a West End and Broadway star, singing ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’. Other performers were Peter Andre, singing ‘Mysterious Girl’ and Misunderstood, an all-singing all-dancing duo from South London, who performed ‘Girls in London’ with the 12 semi-finalists.
UK broadcaster and TV celebrity Piers Morgan asked the final five contestants their last questions before the judges had to decide who would take the crown.
The parade of nations of Miss World 2019 was one of the most interesting in history, as each of the 111 candidates got a chance to enter the stage wearing her national costume and dancing to a national song, displaying some of the culture and colors of all participating countries.
A group of candidates performed as well, accompanied by local children caring flags from all competing nations, in one of the most beautiful moments of the night.
After 3 weeks of great activities, Miss World had a very entertaining and fun to watch final show, as a matter of fact, perhaps the best show since the Endemol years (1998-2001), which remain unbeatable in terms of production.
The winner was the young woman who shinned the most during the telecast and we bet she will be an excellent Miss World. In overall terms, results were very fair (GB was “spot on” with its Super 11), though we were surprised to see Hungary and Czech Republic out of the Top 40.
We congratulate the MWO on a memorable year and a great way to end the decade!
