Being the first Miss World from India in 17 years, Chhillar's win made headlines across her country and she instantly became a superstar. Currently, she has 790,000 followers on Facebook and astonishing 4.3 million on Instagram. As a testament to the way she was raised, this young medical student has not let the fame gone to her head. She has taken to the "celebrity" aspect of the title like a fish to water but her humility, inner peace and belief in her mission has remained consistent.

Throughout her reign, Chhillar has travelled to countries on almost every continent of the world. She has spread the message of Beauty With A Purpose and has also actively promoted her project of making basic menstrual hygiene accessible to young women from disadvantaged communities in her country. Not only has she installed machines producing biodegradable sanitary pads in her country, the first one in Africa was installed in Nelson Mandela's home town, Mvezo, on what would have been his 100th birthday.

Despite being equally comfortable at fashion shoots, runway shows, television appearances and red carpet events, Nel-Peters has proven that Miss Universe is more than just a pretty face. She survived a highjacking attempt in Johannesburg shortly after being crowned. As Nel-Peters said in her words, she was left with the choice to let it break her spirit or not. She made the decision to empower herself and other women by launching her 'Unbreakable' campaign, which aims to teach women basic and advance self-defense techniques. Nel-Peters' sister, Franje (10), was born without a cerebellum and is completely disabled. She has called her sister her biggest motivator in life and aspires to support as many charitable causes as possible.

After she gives up her crown in Thailand, a bright future awaits her. Nel-Peters will be represented by IMG models. As she embarks on an international modeling career, she continues to embody all the qualities of a modern, confidently beautiful young women.
